Bi-Weekly Build Challenge, Week 103: Fixer Uppers; Modernized Farmhouse Edition!

Not everything is originally designed strictly in terms of style. Sometimes, we focus on function over aesthetics. Very simply put, homes built on agricultural lands were called farmhouses and they were built out of necessity. The style evolved from the characteristics of the place, people, climate and materials available in the particular region where it was located. While there were no set rules for constructing or defining the look of early farmhouses, they were usually one to two floor rectangular dwellings, made of local materials ranging from wood, stone, and mudbricks depending on the abode's location. The iconic farmhouse we are familiar with today that features clapboard, exterior siding, a semi-enclosed front porch, and two floors became a standardized look. In many parts of America today, the aesthetic of these old, practical farmhouses is becoming popular once again. This has led to the emergence of what we call the 'modern farmhouse' style, defined by homes that seek to combine the feel of the utility-focused farmhouse with the needs of modern comfort. But of course, apron front sinks and bead-board backsplashes, both hallmarks of contemporary farmhouse style, were not a thing during colonial times in the United States. Build from scratch or choose any Farmhouse-style home (you may use EA properties or download from the gallery), then spruce it up with modernized features and be sure to capture that homey, family-centered and folksy aesthetic!

    Key Elements:

    • Simple floor-plans. Many farmhouses feature ample cooking space in the back on the house, formal living area in the front of the house, and bedrooms on the second floor. Unlike many modern homes, stairs were are often located near the kitchen.

    • Functional porches. They had two primary functions. During the summer, they provided a place to cool off. And all year round they functioned as mudrooms providing a place to kick off dirty work boots before heading inside.

    • Clapboard/wooden siding. The original exterior colors for these houses were relatively limited and premixed in a choice of white, light green, pale yellow, light blue, and a few dark colors, notably red.

Residential properties ONLY. Must be fully functional. (TIP: Consider using cheats to unlock debug/hidden items and to place objects more freely!)

NOTE: Challenges are open for TWO weeks!
