I hired a nanny and the mother lit the house on fire and his first reaction was to run past the toddler and grab the cat and run.

Adding Deaf people to The Sims 4

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:51 PM PDT

A disclaimer: I'm not Deaf, but I've studied American Sign Language and Deaf culture and I've been a fan of The Sims since the first game. I believe that if the developers want to start including disabled people in the games, Deafness would be the easiest place to start, and after some thought here's how I would do it and what features I would have.

    • First off, Deafness would need to be a patch, not included in a pack. Making Deaf Simmers pay to see themselves represented is just wrong.
    • Disabilities would need to be separate from traits. Making Deaf Sims inherently have less individualised personality than other Sims is also just wrong.
    • With adding deafness to the game, I would add a Sign Language skill with either three or five levels. All Deaf Sims who start the game at Child or higher would have three or four levels in this. (It would be separate from the child Social skill.) In gameplay, what level of Sign Language a toddler has upon aging to child would depend on their communication skill, but they should have at least one or two.
    • Hearing Sims start with no levels in Sign Language, but can learn from classes, books, university classes, and from special socials with Deaf Sims. Certain socials from hearing Sims to Deaf Sims would already be available because they don't rely heavily on language (Show Photos, playing on playgrounds or with games or soccer balls together, etc.) but ones that rely on spoken word more would be limited until the hearing Sim gains some Sign Language skill.
    • For both hearing sims and Deaf Sims, increasing the Sign Language skill unlocks more social interactions with Deaf Sims. This would start with simple things, like Tell Joke or Get to Know, and would move on to more complex things like Tell Unbelievable Story or Profess Undying Love.
    • With low levels of Sign Language, there's a chance for miscommunications between hearing Sims and Deaf Sims, which would result in an Embarrassed moodlet for the hearing Sim and an Angry or Embarrassed moodlet for the Deaf one. The Deaf Sim wearing a hearing aid would reduce this chance, but not eradicate it entirely.
    • Deaf Sims would learn musical skills more slowly, but could still learn them. Hearing aids would reduce the difference partially, but not completely. (I'm operating on the assumption that Deaf Sims are profoundly deaf, and not simply hard of hearing.) Their social skills would increase faster after level four or five of Sign Language, and when using socials with Deaf Sims or hearing Sims with high Sign Language.
    • Deaf Sims would increase relationship with one another faster, and would have special socials like inside jokes or physical puns.
    • There might be a small chance of a baby being born deaf.
    • Upon aging to Elder, there might be a small chance of an Elder Sim beginning to experience the same miscommunications as Deaf Sims and hearing Sims with low Sign Language have at times. Wearing a hearing aid or learning Sign Language would reduce this.

I'm sure there are others, but I think that this would at least be a start, and that Deafness would likely be the easiest disability to include in the game and a good start towards more inclusiveness in the future. Besides, who doesn't want to see Deaf kids teaching Sign to their hearing friends, or toddlers practising together? I think that the mild deafness chance for Elders might make them seem more different from Adults, too.
