Greetings, everyone! New month, new thread.

To help keep these sort of preference/advice seeking posts to a minimum and facilitate better discussion, let's keep questions and comments about which EP, GP, SP, DLC, PC or laptop here in one place. We've also found a [helpful in-depth post on Sims Community](https://simscommunity.info/2020/04/24/the-ultimate-guide-what-pack-for-the-sims-4-should-i-get/) that can help with your decision too, based on what you're interested in.

    Is it worth it?

For computers and laptops, it might be better to head over to a sub that specializes in those recommendations, such as /r/SuggestALaptop, /r/buildapc, or /r/buildapcforme. You can still ask here, they are just *way* better equipped to answer those questions. However, we recognise that these subs may be overwhelming or difficult to navigate for those who don't know much about computers. We are always looking for more accessible guides to help you guys out. One of our community members, /u/iOui has done just that, and created some Sims specific youtube guides to help with purchasing your next computer so you can enjoy The Sims. You can go check out her videos here: http://youtube.com/OuiSims

If you check over on EA AnswersHQ forum you can also find [this page](https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-PC/READ-FIRST-Make-sure-you-meet-minimum-requirements-PC-Mac/m-p/6420780#M102196) which outlines the minimum system requirements.

Another option is to plug your PC specs over at [Can You RUN it] (https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri) or [PC Gaming Benchmark](https://www.pcgamebenchmark.com/) or just search "will my PC run it" in Google for other options.

Threads asking this question outside of this post are likely to be removed to reduce over-saturation within the sub (see rule 8!)

Happy simming, happy window-shopping, and happy upgrading!

I realized why the Sims 4 struggles to keep my attention

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:16 AM PST

So I've definitely watched YouTubers compair each iteration of the game. It has been pointed out many times that while the game looks beautiful, it is lacking in game play. Makin' Magic was MY favorite growing up. I did love the Sims 2 while it was out, but I was very eager for Sims 3. The Sims 2 Castaway also is up there with Makin' Magic. And then other than that - World Adventures was SO fun for me.

The Sims 4 is like sitting at a really pretty dollhouse and playing house. You create the story, there aren't any quirks or random events. No one throws a wrench in your story, there are no really fun quests. It gets old after awhile. I liked the games mentioned earlier because there were goals and challenges. Random, funny things would happen and it was way MORE engaging.

I've never really been a builder and my main focus has always been gameplay. And man, I hate the lack of stories in the Sims 4. I hate the lack of quirks. Its predictable and gets boring. Thats not to say I haven't enjoyed the game, but dang... I used to wait up ALL night and wait for the new expansions to launch. I remember begging my mom for Sims 2 University in a Best Buy. That feeling of excitement where you can't think about anything else. It just doesn't do what it used to for me and its sad.

I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but that's it. I hope everyone is doing well and that Snowy Escape is fun! Thanks for reading, I'm curious to see other's thoughts.

Does your playstyle influence your favourite pack? (RESULTS!)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 03:10 PM PDT

Does your playstyle influence your favourite pack? (RESULTS!)

Last week I posted a survey I made which aimed to find out whether your playstyle influences your pack preferences and jesus you guys love a survey. 834 people filled it out which was absolutely amazing – I was honestly only expecting about 50 results maximum.

I've summarised the finding and I'll post all the links to the data at the bottom for you to do your own deep dives into if you want! A small disclaimer for any statisticians in the audience: absolutely none of these results have been significance tested because I simply couldn't bring myself to look at p values in my time off.

    But anyway, onto the headlines:

Does your playstyle influence your favourite pack?

Nope, not particularly. Quite a lot of effort went into finding out basically nothing!

The only notable difference is that builders like Expansion Packs the most (a mean average of 4, compared to 3.67 for Create-A-Simmers and 3.63 for Gameplayers). Otherwise, opinions of packs are reasonably consistent across all playstyles.

    https://preview.redd.it/xf30i1vd7iw51.png?width=2029&format=png&auto=webp&s=5afc1c772b231adac3e1ccf68d6bbf13d2d12717

The most interesting thing for me was actually just how people rank their preferred playstyles - the majority say they're gameplayers/storytellers which is interesting considering that's the lowest-ranked part of the Sims 4 (more on that later). Here's the breakdown of people's preferred playstyles:

    https://preview.redd.it/3awvxwswvhw51.png?width=1652&format=png&auto=webp&s=94c25b0ff6929ded355501bd1f77af88f0fb8c88

    Does playstyle influence anything?

There are slight differences between your overall opinions of aspects of the game:

    • Gameplayers are more positive about live mode (3.07 average, compared to 2.65 for Builders; 2.71 for CAS).
    • Weirdly, CAS-ers like Build mode more than Builders (4.37 and 4.08 respectively); and Builders rate CAS higher than CAS-ers (4.23 and 3.85) respectively. Maybe it's a case of not knowing the issues because they don't tend to build/make sims?
    • But, as you can see on the bar chart, opinions are pretty level...

    https://preview.redd.it/bjkq6z2fxhw51.png?width=2481&format=png&auto=webp&s=1bc562ade10cde19c41a88e2a62e6df0f0703de8

I do wonder if there would have been a better way to divide up play styles – maybe there could have been tighter categories for gameplay (such as storytellers versus challenge-players). Idk let me know in the comments if you have ideas!

Does anything else influence your favourite pack?

    Not dramatically.

The device that you play on influences certain packs a little. u/TheFanshionista pointed out in the comments of the first post that they find Get Together essential on Console for the club system and this is reflect in the results (4.08 for Console v. 3.60/3.65 for PC/Mac). The results suggest that console players also like Game Packs/Stuff Packs more generally, however the sample size of Console players who own these packs gets a bit small so they aren't particularly reliable.

Your buying habit also does to a certain extent: people who say they tend to buy packs at full price when they come out have a higher opinion of DLC than those who say they never/rarely buy packs. This is entirely what you would expect but I don't have anything else to comment on really, so I'm putting a graph in anyway!

    https://preview.redd.it/nil7s2286iw51.png?width=2979&format=png&auto=webp&s=bca2f08b072e1cf5c3b3a9709e55d9a6d425a4d8

(*Just to note also that the sample of those who 'rarely/never buy packs' was a bit smaller than the other two groups, which also will factor into the fact they have more extreme opinions. Also the statements I used to jusge buying habits weren't particularly good methodologically sooo...)

Well that's not very interesting… Let's look at the macro level.

What are the community's favourite packs?

    1. Seasons (4.5)
    2. Parenthood (4.39)
    3. Tiny Living (4.35)
    4. Laundry Day (4.24)
    5. City Living (4.1)

Fun fact: out of the 749 people who own and rated Season, not one person gave it a '1'. It's the only pack where this happened (maybe Snowy Escape will join it?).

What are the community's least favourite packs?

    No surprises here…

    1. My First Pet Stuff (2.18)
    2. Star Wars: Journey to Batuu (2.24)
    3. Luxury Party Stuff (2.64)
    4. Spooky Stuff (2.65)

However for all of these packs, a few mavericks gave them a 5/5, so one's man trash is another man's treasure and all that. Here's a graph of all the pack means from lowest to highest:

    https://preview.redd.it/yss8k5kurhw51.png?width=2376&format=png&auto=webp&s=b2445d2872e7294bbd24e259c58d9a4d80751040

How does the Sims 4 fare overall?

    • Overall, players rate Sims 4 a thoroughly average 3.35.
    • Sims 4 is strongest in Build/Buy Mode (4.21) and CAS (4.01).
    • As you'd expect if you've spent a week on this subreddit, it's weakest area is Live Mode/Gameplay (2.88) - which is ridiculous given it's a life simulator game.

I would really like to be able to do this survey again with Simmers who aren't just from Reddit because I do think that subs like this do act like an echo chamber so it's not that surprising that opinions are pretty homogeneous.

    • The device you play on definitely influences your opinion of game performance (RIP Console players):

    https://preview.redd.it/3u2xxj3x4iw51.png?width=1653&format=png&auto=webp&s=39e52018e615ccd650eafdc879e252336d2bad2d

    • Two-thirds (67%) of respondents use gameplay mods like MCCC or SoL; 62% use custom content.
    • However, despite the poor reviews of gameplay, 30% of respondents who have played the Sims 4 and at least one other Sims game say it's their favourite. It ties with Sims 2 (30%), with the Sims 3 being the fan favourite (39%).

    https://preview.redd.it/sd08h5rmqhw51.png?width=1653&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a036868c38712e09eec895940ab871b237f4443

    More pack facts please?

    • Expansion Pack quality has remained fairly consistent over the years.

    https://preview.redd.it/37t29a9sqhw51.png?width=1366&format=png&auto=webp&s=3fe780f8c4e81503f7e22fd2bf67c2125bb5020b

    • Game Packs have actually got slightly worse over the according to the trendline, although that might be due to the influence of a certain recent game pack…

    https://preview.redd.it/fkefdb3rqhw51.png?width=1363&format=png&auto=webp&s=cbc245b386dc72792435c07c75b51552cd97c8c5

    • On a positive note, EA has actually got a handle on Stuff Packs recently! With the exception of MFP, player opinion of stuff packs has increased pretty steadily.

    https://preview.redd.it/l75z8dupqhw51.png?width=1366&format=png&auto=webp&s=88288cb2a22cc50b1d3a03ab1da9492cfdb59232

    • Pack ownership isn't particularly interesting except for the blip that's Star Wars… I know it's the newest pack so you'd expect fewer people to have bought it but considering EA has put it on a 50% sale already, that 12% stat is pretty damning.

    https://preview.redd.it/kxsy1czxqhw51.png?width=3103&format=png&auto=webp&s=506feac15f61cd4545348016d468ae6566ddbf8b

And finally, an honourable mention for the 8 people who told me they "very rarely/never buy packs" and yet also admitted to owning all thirty-five packs*.* You're completely delusional, but I respect it.

    ---

Well that's a long post! Thanks to Boris for putting London into a Tier 2 lockdown which meant I didn't have much else to do with my evenings than analyse Sims 4 survey data.

If you like looking at tables, here are all the results for you to look through yourself. Feel free to download the data and play around yourself or if you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I'll answer them!

Tables of all the answers to the questions
