    ✨ Some tips for legacy/generation gameplay in TS4 ✨

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:29 PM PST

I've been playing the same TS4 save file since 2015 and I'm on my 14th generation right now. I've seen a lot of people around reddit wonder how they could keep playing the same family for so long without getting bored, so I thought up some tips that have helped me stay interested in keeping my generations going.

Just a side note, I don't have any particular rules for gameplay and this isn't affiliated with the legacy challenge. Also, these are just tips and you do not have to do all (or any) of them to keep you invested in your family! These are just some ideas!!

    • Play a new generation for every new stuff/game/expansion pack. Sometimes if an expansion pack has a lot of content, I might play two generations. I.e. when realm of magic came out my heir became a spellcaster --> when DU came out his kids went to university etc.
    • If you have multiple kids, it's easier to choose just 1 heir. Who do you like the best? Who do you think could have an interesting storyline? It might get pretty overwhelming in the long run to keep switching between multiple households. I've had twins in the past and it has been hard to choose between them so I've kept them together most of the time. I usually "take care" of the current heir's siblings by getting them a job or marrying them off to someone before I let them do their own thing.
    • Don't like how your heir looks like? Feel free to tune them up a bit. It's just a game after all, a little bit of cheating never hurt nobody!
    • If you're not so fond of a certain generation, keep changing between normal and long aging. I like to keep it on normal from toddlers to teenagers. If I really want to play more with a certain sim I keep it on long. You can also make your own custom ages with mods.
    • Change houses every new generation. Or even multiple times per gen! It really gives a fresh start. I usually give all the important things to the heir before they move out (like photos and paintings etc). Also, it gets pretty boring to be rich all the time, so sometimes it's fun to go from a huge mansion back to a starter home.
    • Change up your play style. Always make good and wholesome families where the kids get straight A's and everybody lives happily ever after? Well, the next gen is all evil. Kids skip school, they get the worst traits from the parenthood pack, they'll do the "rude introduction" every time, they'll join the criminal career... or maybe the spoiled rich kid escapes and starts from the bottom with 0 simoleons? There's a lot of options and ideas out there!
    • Make your own drama. We all know TS4 doesn't really have any drama without mods so sometimes you have to make it up on your own (sometimes MCCC does it for you though). Bored of your current partner? Not enough room in the household? Have a secret other family in the next neighborhood? Whoops, I guess someone will die tragically when taking the trash out....
    • Make your heir their own club. The possibilities are really endless. Want to make a band? Well, name the club after it and just make everyone play instruments or sing. Or maybe you just want to hang out with a group of friends in a park and do homework and nobody can escape unless you say so.
    • Take a lot of screenshots. It's fun to look back on the previous generations and how your style has changed along the way. I download a lot of poses so I don't always take screenshots of the same animations. How many different screenshots can I take of the first kiss animation? Oh boy..
    • Can't let go of your current family? Save them to the gallery! You can keep playing them in some other save you've made. I always move out with my new heir before the previous generation dies out, so I don't have to actually witness them dying. Also, I have an immortal dog since cats&dogs came out. He's the only one I can't let go of!
    • Keep track of your family tree. TS4 can't keep up with it. I can't even see my full family tree anymore, so I'm kind of sad I didn't write them down somewhere right from the start.
    • Add new families from the gallery or make new ones. At some point there will be too many sims who are somehow affiliated with your household. Sometimes I just delete the old ones to make more room. I don't feel too bad If they were a long lost cousin or something, maybe they just moved away?
    • Edit neighborhoods. Put in new houses or restaurants or clubs etc. When you think about it, it is pretty realistic to get rid of an old building and build something entirely new.
    • Get new CC or mods to spice things up. New gen will always have something different to wear!
    • Have other save files. It is pretty tiring to just play one household all the time. I usually have other save files for challenges (like not so berry or rags to riches) and an empty world for building purposes.
    • Really getting bored? Play something else!

If you have some good tips as well feel free to post them!! I'd be super interested in reading them. Have a nice day 🌟
